Area or Perimeter? A Simple Way to Tell What the Question Wants
Many geometry errors happen before any calculation begins: the wrong measurement is chosen.
Think “inside” for area
Area measures the amount of surface inside a 2D shape. Questions about carpet, paint coverage, grass, tiles or the size of a floor usually point to area.
Area is measured in square units such as cm², m² or km².
Think “edge” for perimeter
Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape. Questions about fencing, edging, borders or the length around a field usually point to perimeter.
Perimeter is measured in ordinary length units such as cm, m or km.
One rectangle, two different questions
For a rectangle 8 m long and 5 m wide:
Area = 8 × 5 = 40 m²Perimeter = 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 m Unit check: if your area answer ends in metres instead of square metres, stop and check the calculation.
Read the story, not just the diagram
A diagram may show the same rectangle for both types of problem. The wording tells you whether you need the inside or the boundary.
