A monitor arm can free desk space and improve screen positioning, but only when the desk, monitor and arm are mechanically compatible. The important specifications are often hidden in mounting diagrams rather than marketing photos.
Confirm VESA mounting support
Many monitors use standard VESA hole patterns, but some require an adapter or do not expose a standard mount. Check the monitor manual and remove any stand cover only as directed by the manufacturer.
Monitor weight must fall inside the arm range
Gas-spring arms are designed for a weight range. A display that is too light or too heavy may drift even if the VESA plate physically fits. Use the monitor weight without its original stand when comparing the rating.
Check desk thickness and construction
Clamp mounts require a suitable edge and thickness. Grommet mounts use a hole through the desk. Thin hollow-core desktops and fragile materials may need reinforcement or may be unsuitable. If the desk manufacturer restricts clamp loads, follow that guidance.

Display, USB and power cables need enough slack to move through the arm range without pulling on ports. Built-in cable channels are useful, but tight channels can be difficult with thick power or DisplayPort cables.
Dual arms add interaction between displays
Two-monitor arms must support the combined desk load and provide enough horizontal range to align screens. Large monitors can collide or leave a center gap depending on arm geometry.
